Project Scope

BMWC Constructors partnered with AEP on the Unit 2 Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Installation Project at AEP’s Rockport, IN power plant. AEP’s Rockport plant includes two 1,300-megawatt Babcock and Wilcox coal-fired units. BMWC’s scope of work involved the installation of the SCR and associated ductwork, piping, structural steel, and electrical systems.

BMWC successfully installed:

• 3,000 tons of new SCR support structural steel
• Three reactor trains with 2,800 tons of SCR reactor duct work
• 300 tons of boiler house stiffening steel
• 20,000 linear feet of pipe ranging from small bore up to 48 inches
• Multiple utility relocations for the boiler house stiffening steel installation
• Relocation of conduit and cabling throughout the unit

BMWC’s project execution plan was centered around the idea that modularizing the structural steel and ductwork on the ground would provide significant productivity efficiencies. The BMWC team modularized the structural steel into sections weighing hundreds of thousands of pounds. The SCR reactor was also heavily modularized and erected in 28 super modules, the heaviest of which weighed about 225 tons. All three reactor trains were set on top of the structural steel with 46 total lifts.
